Keiki Program

The Keiki program at Hui Mālama O Ke Kai is a place where 5th and 6th grade students can come after school to further their Hawaiian culture education. Your keiki will undoubtedly be introduced to essential Hawaiian values, practices, and traditions because ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge) lies at the heart of our lesson programs. Keiki are also supported with their homework and extracurricular activities. In addition to after-school care, our programs include monthly activities that promote family involvement and togetherness.

For questions and additional information, please contact our Keiki Program Lead at keiki@huimalamaokekai.org

ʻŌpio Program

ʻŌpio program at Hui Mālama O Ke Kai is a place where 7th through 12th grade students can come after-school to extend their learning in Hawaiian culture. Your ʻōpio will take turns leading keiki program in lesson plans, oli, and pule. They will adopt responsibilities throughout our program and will be given tools to help as they transition from high school student to young adult. In addition to their after-school care, our programs provide monthly activities encouraging family engagement and togetherness.

For questions and additional information, please contact our ʻŌpio Program Lead at opio@huimalamaokekai.org

ʻOhana Activities

Once a month, Hui Mālama O Ke Kai organizes ʻohana activities for the families of our after-school program students. Families attend monthly events that allow them to meet other families in the community and foster a sense of belonging among them. This contributes to the development of a strong, caring, and supportive ʻohana and demonstrates to students that their parents care about them and value their education.

Keiki & ʻŌpio Program FAQ's

Hui Mālama O Ke Kai hosts two recruitment periods, at the beginning of our program year (Oct - Nov) and at the middle of our program year (Jan-Feb). We encourage everyone to register their child during those time periods. Sometimes we have open-enrollment throughout our program year (Oct-May) depending on how many program participants are registered. Stay tuned through our website and social media handles.

Keiki Program: Send all inquiries to our Keiki Program Lead at keiki@huimalamaokekai.org

ʻŌpio Program: Send all inquires to our ʻŌpio Program Lead at opio@huimalamaokekai.org

All keiki are welcomed to register. However, we do try to prioritize keiki from Ahupuaʻa ʻo Waimānalo.

The schools that we primarily serve are Blanche Pope Elementary, Waimānalo Elementary & Intermediate, Mālama Honua Public Charter School, Maunawili Elementary, Keolu Elementary, Kaʻelepulu Elementary, and Kailua High School.

All Hui Mālama O Ke Kai Programs are provided at no cost to individual families.

Hui Mālama O Ke Kai advocates for ʻai pono or healthy eating. First snack consists of a fruit or vegetable and the second snack is more fulfilling, usually a sandwich or laulau, etc.

Hui Mālama O Ke Kai ensures the health and well-being of everyone by asking parents to keep their keiki/ʻōpio home if he/she is feeling sick. We also ask that each student fill out a Health Self Declaration form via google forms before arriving at our site (this link is shared with all those enrolled). Upon arrival, we do a temperature check. Along with these protocols we ask that everyone wears a mask and social distance at all times.
